Frequently asked questions

No. Each of the four Hungarian medical universities (Debrecen, Pécs, Szeged, Semmelweis) administers its own separate entrance examination. Formats are similar — typically Biology and Chemistry — but questions, difficulty levels, and weighting differ. You can apply to multiple universities and sit multiple exams on different dates. Most international students apply to 2–3 Hungarian universities simultaneously.
Hungarian university exams are generally considered less competitive overall than the IMAT, with higher acceptance rates for international students. The subject content is similar — Biology and Chemistry dominate. There is no Critical Thinking section (unlike IMAT). Semmelweis Budapest is the most selective Hungarian university and closest to IMAT in difficulty. Debrecen, Pécs, and Szeged have more accessible admissions processes. The key difference is you must travel to Hungary to sit the exams.
Hungarian medical universities typically open applications November–January for September intake. Entrance exam sessions are usually held February–June. Offer letters are issued April–July. The application cycle starts earlier than most other Eastern European countries. Most international students who are successful apply in December–February. Applying early is strongly recommended — it provides more exam session options and earlier offer letters which help with visa planning.
Some universities offer preliminary online assessments as a first stage, but the formal entrance examination must be sat in Hungary. Debrecen and Pécs in particular offer online preliminary interviews or assessments that can determine exam eligibility before you travel. Check each university's current admissions process — online options have expanded in recent years but full online admission without travel to Hungary is not standard practice.
Yes — for international English-programme applicants, the entrance examination is conducted entirely in English. There is no Hungarian language requirement for the entrance exam. Clinical years will require functional Hungarian for patient interaction, but this is not assessed at the admissions stage. Universities provide Hungarian language courses during the programme.
Most Hungarian universities allow you to re-sit the examination. Some universities offer multiple exam sessions per year, allowing a second attempt in the same application cycle. If you do not pass in one year, you can apply again the following year. There is no limit on the number of attempts. Failed exam attempts do not affect future applications. If you fail at Semmelweis, you may still be eligible at Debrecen, Pécs, or Szeged in the same cycle if the dates allow.
